We are very proud to offer the carvings
of Peter Mahlknecht (PEMA), one of the oldest woodcarving families in
Europe. There are many carvers that produce beautiful works;
we would just ask you to compare those carvings to PEMA figures in
'liveliness' and 'expression' and you will see the difference.
We carry a small inventory of many of
their figures, but it is impossible to have all of their works in stock.
That is why we encourage you to
e-mail us with any special requests you may have. In the past,
we have been able to supply virtually every figure requested; a photo
and price quote are provided within 24 hrs.

Val Gardena is located in the Tyrol region of the
Alps
- in northern Italy very near the Swiss and Austrian
borders. It is here that the tradition of alpine
wood carving began. The rich grain of strong maple and
Lindenwood and long winters in the Gardena valley were the
reasons why many families began to supplement their farm
income by selling the wood carvings. Initially, people
carved toys and dolls. It then expanded to religious
items, primarily Saints and nativity. The PEMA
(Peter Mahlknecht) family has been one of the leading
workshops in the art of wood carving for several decades
now. They are world-recognized and hold copyrights on most
of the sculptures commonly sold throughout Europe. |
